Traditions can be scared and beautiful, but they can also be outdated and boring. As the saying goes “out with the old and in with the new”.

In todays modern age many couples are skipping the many wedding traditions like wearing white, or having traditional cake, or even hand-written invitations. These elements are still lovely and special to many people and rightfully so, but some people want to jazz it up a bit.

Here a few things people are changing to make their weddings more modern:

1.       Having a non-religious officiant
There has been a rise in couples getting married by family or friends. These people have known them for as long as they can remember and bring an intimate touch to the ceremony. Or a celebrant, like myself, who can deliver a dreamy day to the couple no matter their sex, religion, or race. It is becoming more acceptable across the board to be married by someone that has no religious affiliation.

2.       The bride’s parents not paying for the wedding
More and more couples are paying for their wedding themselves. Yes, parents or guardians may still contribute for certain items or it may be more of cultural respect rather than the responsibility of the bride’s parents. Some couples are even having DIY weddings.

3.       Wearing black or white to a wedding
Wearing black to a wedding was frowned upon and thought to be a bad omen, whereas wearing white was seen to be challenging the bride. However, nowadays a good outfit is a good outfit, no matter what the colour. Weddings are a time to dress up and look your best, depending on the dress code of the wedding.

4.       Non-traditional wedding cake
Many couples are ditching the traditional 3-tiered, white wedding cake and opting for something more fun. Some weddings I have been to have had a charcutier board for a cake, a donut wall, a whole dessert station and even individual cupcakes.

There are many other things that people are adjusting to make their ceremonies and receptions more modern but traditional weddings are and always will be beautiful, it just depends on your own preferences.
